CBS Nuclear Passes NUPIC Audit With Flying Colors

Servicing Class 1E safety-related low- and medium-voltage switchgear and circuit breakers at nuclear power plants requires strict regulation. To provide shop services and on-site field service, CBS Nuclear Services recently completed a Nuclear Procurement Issues Corporation (NUPIC) audit.

NUPIC evaluates standards of quality in the commercial nuclear power industry. It is the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission’s (NRC) preferred method for maintaining its approved suppliers list. CBS Nuclear Services passed with zero findings and was recertified for another 3 years.

“To complete one of these audits with zero findings is a rare and difficult accomplishment,” says Scott Peterson, president of CBS Nuclear Services. “We’d like to congratulate the entire team, and our quality assurance (QA) manager Curt Culver. He is the backbone of our QA program and always ensures that every ‘i’ is dotted and ‘t’ is crossed.”

The audit team, which comprised five auditors from three different utilities, analyzed the QA program for three days. The thorough process included observing safety-related work in progress and interviewing staff.

The NUPIC certification marks a few significant outcomes. Before the audit, CBS Nuclear Services was solely a Class 1E service provider for safety-related electrical equipment. Now, it is certified as a safety-related parts supplier for the nuclear fleets of several major utilities.

CBS Nuclear Services’ quality assurance program complies with 10 CFR 50 Appendix B requirements. The company provides emergency response, repair, remanufacturing, and life-extension services; engineering solutions; and a comprehensive inventory of replacement parts for nuclear and non-nuclear circuit breakers and electrical equipment.
